The transfer window closed yesterday in Spain and, with it, the rumors of a delay of a move to Real Madrid to land Alberto Moreno has come to nothing. According to a Spanish newspaper, however, this was a direct outcome of Liverpool’s determination to keep the 23 year old left-back. They were hoping to get him as a replacement for Marcelo.
Initial reports said Rafa Benitez, Alvaro Arbeloa and Nacho would be used as a cover for Marcelo, but this is not a long term option. On the left side of Real Madrid’s defence is Gomez. Gomez is a central defender by trade; on the other hand, Moreno happens to be Liverpool’s best orthodox left-back.
Without a strong left back, Real Madrid are left weak. It would be fair to say that, starting from its displacement of Andalusia last summer, the Spanish is keen for the move back to his country. Reportedly, Benitez is open to the idea of acquiring Moreno, while Moreno is presumably keen to return to Spain after a year in Merseyside.
If Liverpool could get Sakho – who was probably the best player from last season – to return, they would be more willing to let Moreno to move to Bernabeu.
However, according to reports, Real are weighing up an even stronger offer in order to get their hands on Moreno.
In the end, however, it does not particularly matter because Moreno is a Liverpool player as of this moment. All that Real can hope for is that things pan out in the end.
